I have a supplementary question. Is the minister aware that her department has sent letters to schools limiting the number of students and significantly cutting the funds for the cadet program after the first year? Ms S.M. McHALE

I am aware that the Office for Children and Young People’s Policy has written to the various units. I again make it clear that we have not cut the funding to the cadets program. We have looked at a number of options. Mr M.F. Board: Some schools have 80 kids in a unit, but you are limiting the unit sizes to 50. Ms S.M. McHALE: We have not cut the funding to the cadet units. There is $2.5 million available. We have looked at a range of options to extend the program. Nothing is stopping a school that wants to have more than 50 children in a unit. The same amount of money - $2.5 million - is available for cadets. We want to ensure that we can keep the program fluid and moving. Several members interjected. Ms S.M. McHALE: This is one of the most highly funded programs for young people. It extends to about 6 500 students across the State. It is a very good program.
