❓ Hon Robin Chapple questions the Environment Minister regarding KCGM's Sulphur Dioxide emissions exceeding the EPP NEPM standard in 2000, to which the Minister responds that the standard was exceeded for seven hours, but not all attributed to KCGM, and the company has modified its Air Quality Management Strategy.

I refer to Sulphur Dioxide monitoring for Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd in the Annual Environmental Report for the year 2000 -
(1) Is it correct that throughout the year the EPP NEPM standard was exceeded for six hours, when the permitted limit for the year was eight hours?
(2) If not, can the Minister state how many hours the standard was exceeded?
(3) If yes to (1), can the Minister state what specific actions the company has taken to ensure the events do not occur again to exceed the permitted limit?

The EPP standard was exceeded on six occasions. Detailed assessment of the data shows that, on one of these occasions, there were two consecutive hours during which the standard was exceeded. Therefore the standard was exceeded for seven hours in the year 2000. The EPP allows eight hours over the standard. (3) Not all of the seven hours above the standard in 2000 are believed to have been caused by KCGM, and the allowable eight hours were not exceeded. In 2000, KCGM reviewed and modified its Air Quality Management Strategy so as to ensure that if the weather conditions that gave rise to these events were repeated, the management strategy would minimize the likelihood of the standard being exceeded.
