Burswood Park motorplex—Telethon Community Cinemas
109. Mr Basil Zempilas to the Minister for Sport and Recreation:
I refer to the potential
closure of Telethon Community Cinemas because of the racetrack project.
(1) Has the minister received advice that Telethon
Community Cinemas has informed the Burswood Park Board that the alternative
site offered is inadequate, meaning there are no options available to it?
(2) Will the minister meet with Telethon Community
Cinemas to work through this issue?
(3) Will the minister work with Telethon Community
Cinemas to see whether it can be incorporated into the entertainment precinct
with a set-up like at Edith Cowan University Joondalup campus?

(1)–(3) I thank the member for that
question. In relation to this issue, we have approached the head of Telethon Community
Cinemas to have a meeting, but we have not had a response in relation to that.
My understanding is the Burswood Park Board representatives sat down and talked
about the co-location of the cinema with other activities.
We very much support the continuation of the cinemas. I
have been out there. I love the community cinemas out there. We are talking to
them. I understand these discussions happen each year. Because a lot of different activities happen on that peninsula
each year, there is an annual discussion between the Burswood Park Board
and the cinema about location, car parking and all those issues. That is what
normally happens. Of course, we look forward to continuing to work with them to
make sure it continues to operate. As I said, I understand it is an annual
discussion.
Mr Basil Zempilas: It's been there 24 years.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Are you listening?
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Minister! The minister is on her
feet. Carry on, minister.
Ms Rita Saffioti: He does not listen. It is a pantomime.
It is an act. He is a showman. He does not actually listen.
As I said, this is
an annual discussion in relation to the location of the cinema. They go through
all the other requests to use the peninsula and work to get a win–win
situation for the cinemas and for the peninsula. That is a normal conversation
they have every year. I understand those conversations are continuing. Of
course, as I said, I have been to the cinema with my kids; it is great place
and we would love to see it continue. We look forward to working with the
proponent.
