I refer to the dangerous state of the South Western Highway, which has experienced a 75 per cent increase in traffic, amounting to between 2 000 and 4 500 vehicles travelling through Bridgetown to Bunbury each day plus 72 extra truck movements, due to the decision to discontinue the use of the railway line. (1) What will the minister do in the short term to make sure that another horrific accident such as the three-truck pile-up that happened recently does not occur again? (2) What is the long-term strategy for the upgrading of the South Western Highway? An independent audit assessment is also being undertaken of this section of the highway and a further speed reduction for heavy haulage may be considered if necessary. (2) Upgrading works on the section between Bunbury and Donnybrook commenced several years ago. Works completed in recent years include reconstruction between Bunbury and Boyanup, including four overtaking lanes; reconstruction of Donnybrook main street; construction of seven overtaking lanes and extension of another between Boyanup and Greenbushes; and reconstruction of the road over Trotts Hill, including climbing and descending lanes. Works programmed include reconstruction at Hester Hill in 2005-06, including climbing and descending lanes. Main Roads has also identified future projects to improve the road geometry and seal width between Donnybrook and Bridgetown. These projects are being developed and will be considered as part of a future budget process.
