I refer to school bus services in the Swan Valley region. (1) Will the minister advise why student concession fares are to be introduced on the Upper Swan-Gnangara orange bus service, which services Upper Swan, Belhus, Millendon, Brigadoon, Henley Brook and Baskerville? (2) Are options being considered by the Public Transport Authority to provide direct bus services for students living in the suburbs referred to in (1) who will be attending Ellenbrook Secondary College next year; if yes, will the minister detail the options being considered; and if not, why not? I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. I provide the answer on behalf of the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure - (1) The Upper Swan-Gnangara orange school bus operates entirely within the Perth public transport area. Only students who are outside the PPTA and who live more than 4.5 kilometres from the appropriate school are eligible for free transport. The introduction of fares was on the basis of equity. Students who live inside the PPTA are entitled to a concessional fare. For students who purchase a MultiRider ticket, the fare equates to 50c per trip. (2) Existing Transperth school bus or public routes largely serve the areas in question, which also provide access to an alternative government school - Governor Stirling Senior High School. Transperth advises against rerouting or removing this service as this would disadvantage students attending Governor Stirling Senior High School, La Salle College and Swan Christian College.
