Department of State Development advises:
(1) No.
(a) The Boodarie Industrial Estate is suitable for a range of industries, including chemical processing. However, it is not envisaged that a major LNG project would be appropriate for the site.
While BHP Billiton's Hot Briquetted Iron plant is in the process of being dismantled, the company proposes that much of the underlying Mining Act tenure will be required for its future expansion associated with the Outer Harbour development.
Furthermore, the Government remains firmly committed to delivering fundamental economic and social change to indigenous communities in the Kimberley through development of LNG processing facilities at James Price Point, north of Broome.
This site was chosen after extensive environmental, technical, socio-economic and heritage studies of 43 sites in the Kimberley, as well as independent analysis of potential locations outside the Kimberley.
Specific disadvantages of a Pilbara location include:
? distance from the Browse Basin (over 800 kilometres);
? existing port constraints;
? native title and other heritage constraints; and
? lack of land with sufficient elevation close to the coast.
