DROUGHT — SOUTHERN RANGELANDS
972. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Given the government has
ignored this situation for too long and cattle are now too weak to be
transported elsewhere for agistment and the fact that the rest of the state is
experiencing water and feed deficiency, how and where does the Premier and the
Minister for Agriculture and Food suggest that these cattle be destocked?

I outlined to the house a whole range of initiatives that the
state and federal governments are taking. In response to an earlier question, I
also outlined that these issues have been going on for years as the land,
particularly in the southern rangeland, deteriorates. But the main thing is
that the departmental officers are working with the pastoralists to assist with
the agistment process in which stock are moved more quickly between stations to
ensure animals are safe, with adequate access to food and water.
Mr V.A. Catania interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for North West Central, I call you
to order for the first time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I close on one point —
