HEDLAND SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL — SAFETY ISSUES
931. Mr
P.J. RUNDLE to the Premier:
I
have a supplementary question. The government can commit $60 million for a new
secondary school in Piara Waters; when will staff and students in Port
Hedland be given a new school that they can safely attend?
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members! I think
the Premier can answer this question on his own.

That
is an embarrassing line of argument. The member engages in this a lot. Piara
Waters in the southern suburbs is massively
expanding. There are not enough places in existing schools for students, so you
have to build a new high school—that is what happens. Both
governments have done that. When the member for Roe's predecessor was
in the former government, that happened—and
we do that. But the Nationals come in here and say that kids in a certain
geographical area should go to massively overcrowded schools. That is their
argument. National Party members consistently
engage in a sort of sectarianism; it is divisive and it is nasty. I just
outlined to the member—again, he did not listen—that we are building a new high school in Roebourne.
Does the member for Roe know where Roebourne is? We are expanding
Karratha high school because the number of students at that school is growing.
That is what you do. You have to expand schools. We are spending $25 million or
thereabouts on that high school. We are spending $18 million on Hedland Senior
High School. During the term of the last government, nothing was spent on
Hedland high school. Here we are doing that and the member for Roe comes in
here and attacks a group of kids in Piara Waters. The way that National Party
members act and conduct themselves with a divisiveness that now involves
attacking a group of kids is, frankly, disgusting.
