I refer to the operational use of passive drug-sniffer dog(s) in entertainment areas and I ask:
(a) in each of the years 2008, 2009 and 2010, how many occasions were special operations undertaken using those dog(s);
(b) in each of the years 2008, 2009 and 2010, what was the cost of each operation;
(c) in each of the years 2008, 2009 and 2010, how many drug charges can be directly attributed to such operations;
(d) in each of the years 2008, 2009 and 2010, what quantity and types of drugs seized can be directly linked to these operations; and
(e) what, if any, is the standard number of staff deployed for the purpose of these operations?

Western Australia Police did not have a Passive Alert Drug (PAD) Dog capability in 2008.
2009 - 65 operations;
This number includes 4 operations conducted utilising PAD dogs and handlers from Customs and Corrective Services. The Western Australia Police PAD training program commenced on 25th June 2009, culminating in a fulltime, dedicated resource on 19th November 2009.
2010 - 31 operations to 18 March.

2009 - No extraordinary costs to the Dog Squad, normal police officer remuneration applies.
2010 - No extraordinary costs to the Dog Squad, normal police officer remuneration applies.

2009 - 243 charges
2010 - 41 charges

2009 - 108.7 grams of cannabis, 100 cannabis cigarettes, 11.2 grams of amphetamine, 47 dexamphetamine tablets, 28 grams of MDMA (ecstasy), 574 ecstasy tablets, 16 smoking implements.
2010 - 81.4 grams of cannabis, 366.25 grams of amphetamine, 18.25 grams of MDMA, 9.25 grams of miscellaneous drugs.

Dog Squad resources currently include two PAD dog handlers and three PAD dogs.
All other resources are sourced by business units coordinating operations and vary greatly depending on the circumstances of individual operations.
