refer to the Preservation Needs Assessment in the State Records Commission
2017-18 Annual Report, and ask: (a) how
many items in the State Archives Collection were considered to be in: (i) good condition; (ii) fair condition; (iii) poor condition; and (iv) unacceptable condition; (b) how
many items in the Collection rated as being in poor or unacceptable condition were
reel-to-reel tapes, magnetic tapes, standard cassette tapes or mini cartridges; (c) were
any of the recording media associated with Royal Commissions: (i) if
yes, which Royal Commissions; and (ii) please
list the Royal Commission recording media that was listed as being either poor
or unacceptable condition; and (d) will
the State Records Office be provided with more funding for the adequate storage
of the items in poor or unacceptable condition: (i) if
yes, how much funding and when will it be supplied; and (ii) how
much storage is needed?

(a) Based on the 2.5 per cent sampling of the collection:
(i) 47.44 per cent or approximately 559 074 items
(ii) 38.75 per cent or approximately 456 065 items
(iii) 12.06 per cent or approximately 141 939 items
(iv) 1.75 per cent or approximately 20 596 items
(b) 94 audio tapes in poor or unacceptable condition were identified as part of the sampling of 2.5 per cent of the Collection.
(c) Yes
(i) Royal Commission into Prostitution (1976) and Royal Commission: Inquiry into Aboriginal people in Laverton Area (1976).
(ii) Royal Commission into Prostitution (1976) – 42 audio tapes; and Royal Commission: Inquiry into Aboriginal people in Laverton Area (1976) – 52 audio tapes.
(d) The State Records Office (SRO) operates within its budget allocation. SRO is currently undertaking a small-scale re-boxing program to rehouse items in poor or unacceptable condition.
(i) Not applicable
(ii) Variable, depending on the scale and risk assessment of the program.
