Since the question relates to industrial development on the Burrup , it is assumed that references to Dampier Island mean the Burrup Peninsula. 1 Following Cabinet endorsement in September 1996 of the Burrup Peninsula Land Use Plan and Management Strategy (which designated areas of land for existing and future industry, and other areas of land for conservation, heritage and recreation), a number of proponents have approached the Government to discuss the possibility of establishing industries on the Burrup Peninsula. (It should be noted that the Burrup Peninsula Land Use Plan and Management Strategy was further endorsed by other planning processes involving extensive consultation, including the Karratha Area Development Strategy 1998 and the Shire of Roebourne Town Planning Scheme No.8.) 2 The names of companies and dates of initial contact are: 1997 Parkside/PMRC Sasol SMX Dow/Shell consortium (and 41 respondents to EoI) 1998 Gorgon Australia LNG 1999 Syntroleum 2000 Oswal Chemicals and Fertilisers Limited Plenty River Corporation 2001 GTL Resources Methanex Australia Pty Ltd 2002 DME International Wesfarmers CSBP 2003 Japan DME 2004 Agrium Australia Pty Ltd Deepak Fertilisers & Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd 2005 Dampier Nitrogen/Dyno Nobel 2006 Woodside Energy Limited 3 In response to a registration of interest process initiated by the State Government in 1997, the Dow/Shell consortium (one of 41 respondents) was granted the right to develop a major petrochemical project, for which locations on the Burrup Peninsula and on West Intercourse Island were considered. In all other cases (listed in (2) above), the company initiated the idea of establishing industry on the Burrup Peninsula. 4 Yes. 5 Dyno Nobel is considering establishing an industry on Site C on the Burrup Peninsula. One other company, whose name is currently confidential, is assessing the suitability of a number of industrial sites on the Burrup Peninsula for its proposed industry.
