My question relates to the new arrangement of school principals being able to appoint their own staff. (1) Will vacancies be openly advertised in both statewide and local media? (2) Will appointments to these vacancies be restricted to teachers already working within the Department of Education and Training, or will they be open to all qualified teachers? (3) If they are restricted to current Department of Education and Training teachers, will that disadvantage schools in their attempt to choose the best teachers for the needs and situation of the individual school? (4) Is there any role for the unions in the making of these appointments; and, if yes, what is it? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD

Hon Alan Cadby: Self-interest! Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD: I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) Teacher vacancies will be advertised on the Department of Education and Training web site and will therefore be accessible statewide, nationally and internationally. (3) The selection process for teachers in Western Australian government schools is not restricted to Department of Education and Training teachers. (4) No.
