(1)–(2) I
thank the member for Nedlands for her question and for her support of the great
code of football. As we saw with the FIFA Women's World Cup, there is
massive interest in football in the nation and indeed Western Australia. We
pre-empted that interest by ensuring that a whole range of projects were
underway to refit numerous community facilities for girls and young women
entering and participating in the game. Participation has continued to
increase. One of the great statements of support by the Cook Labor government for the code of football was the
building and opening of the State Football Centre in the member for
Cannington's electorate. What a magnificent centre! It was a $46 million
investment, which, for the first time in the history of football in Western Australia,
creates a home for football. The excitement about that is palpable.
We will have a very special event on
Friday, 27 October to ultimately honour the rich history of football in WA. The
State Football Centre Festival of Football will see the official opening of the
$46 million centre. It is a legacy of Perth and Western Australia's
role in hosting the FIFA Women's World Cup. The celebration will
coincide with three key games in the Asian qualifiers. The Matildas will be
playing in Perth. Ticket sales have been outstanding for those three games,
including of course the relocated game to Optus Stadium; ticket sales have been
tremendous. On the afternoon of 27 October, the Matildas and our very own Sam
Kerr will be there. It will be a wonderful opportunity to not only celebrate
the Matildas and our homegrown sporting icon Sam Kerr, but also celebrate
football more broadly. The event will go from 3.00 pm to 7.00 pm. It is a ticketed
event because the capacity is around 4 000. For those who are keen to go, we
are keen to see a lot of young people involved in sport to register. Eskimo
Joe, that magnificent Western Australian
cultural identity and headlining WA band, will be part of the celebrations .
Ultimately, this will be a tremendous marking point in the future of football
in WA. We recently had a parliamentary
friends event here celebrating support of the code more broadly. This code is
attracting more and more attention from children, young people and their
parents. It is a code that has so much potential.
I
was pleased to attend with the Minister for Tourism the Perth Glory season
launch last week. Perth G lory has an important role to play in the
future legacy of football in Western Australia.
I encourage people who are interested
and want to be part of the State Football Centre Festival of Football to go to
the VenuesWest website. Tickets can be secured from tomorrow, 18 October. That
afternoon will be an absolute celebration. It will be marvellous, wonderful and
fantastic. Of course, I want you to be there, Madam Speaker, front and centre,
nudging the Minister for Tourism out of the way to get a selfie with Sam Kerr,
I am sure.
The SPEAKER : I will do my
best!
Mr D.A. TEMPLEMAN : That will
be pretty hard, because I can tell you I have not seen someone nudge harder
than the Minister for Tourism since the last Minister for Tourism, but he was
an abject failure! It is going to be great. Again, it is a celebration. It is
an example of our investment in sport and important codes that deliver quality
outcomes for children and young people, young men and young women. It is a great,
celebratory time.
The SPEAKER : The member for
Cottesloe with the last question.
