Cyclone shelters
1263. Hon Neil Thomson to
the Minister for Community Services:
My question without
notice of which some notice has been given is to the minister representing the
minister for communities. I refer to my question without notice 1207 that
referred to cyclone preparedness in the Pilbara and was redirected by the
parliamentary secretary to the Minister for Emergency Services.
(1) Noting the potential impact of severe cyclones,
is the Port Hedland Community Centre on McGregor Street, Port Hedland, ready as
a public cyclone shelter?
(2) If no to (1), will residents in Port Hedland have
access to a safe, nearby option without having to travel to South Hedland?
(3) Is the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub ready
as a public cyclone shelter for South Hedland and nearby communities?
(4) Can the minister please list the available
cyclone shelters and their capacity for the towns of Broome, Karratha, Onslow
and Exmouth?

For the member's
future reference, to avoid confusion, particularly caused by him, there is no
minister for communities. There is a Minister for Community Services. Can the
member please be more precise?
Hon Neil Thomson interjected.
Hon Matthew Swinbourn: If the member would let me
finish, I will explain why there are a number of other ministers who also have
responsibility for the Department of Communities. It will make it a little
easier for all of us if he is more precise in where he directs his questions.
Hon Neil Thomson interjected.
Hon Matthew Swinbourn: If the member had checked that
answer, it said quite precisely ''the Minister for Community Services''.

Hon Matthew Swinbourn: Does the member want the answer
or not?
When identifying
potential evacuation centre locations, it is the responsibility of the local
government, in collaboration with the Local Emergency Management Committee and
relevant emergency management agencies, including the Department of
Communities, to determine that the facilities are appropriate for hazards that
are high risk to the area. During an emergency event, the Department of Fire
and Emergency Services, as the hazard management agency, will advise the
Department of Communities on its preferred facility location based upon the
event-related risk.
(1)–(2) The Town of Port Hedland has
identified the Port Hedland Community Centre as a potential evacuation centre
and has indicated that it is intending to formalise this arrangement through
the Local Emergency Management Committee.
(3) Yes.
