LOCATE — GOVERNMENT LOCATION INFORMATION STRATEGY
693. Ms W.M. DUNCAN to the
Minister for Regional Development:
I understand that a new website was recently launched as part
of the Liberal–National government's location information
strategy. Can the minister please provide an update to the house on this
initiative?

I thank the member for Kalgoorlie for the question. This week
the Liberal–National government launched Locate, an online tool that
will revolutionise the way people and communities can access Western Australia's
core location information. I encourage all members to go onto the website and
look at this very exciting new tool. Locate is the first initiative out of the
government's location information strategy. It is a $23 million
investment in making all the information that the government holds more readily
available to the community of Western Australia. Locate provides the general
public with access to a wide range of government-sourced data and imagery with
a single online application. It includes information about property boundaries,
public transport networks, schools, medical facilities, emergency services and
the latest census statistics, all layered on top of the state's latest
aerial imagery and all available in one place on this website. Potential
homebuyers, real estate investors and developers will be able to easily access
the information all stored in one central location without visiting several
sites.
The other innovation in this new
website is historical maps of Perth and several country towns dating back to
the 1800s. Aerial photography of the state can be layered over the top of this
information, essentially allowing people to take a walk in time. I point out to
the member for Albany that there is some fantastic early imagery of maps of
Albany showing the development of Albany as it has grown over the past 100 or
so years. Schools will be able to access historical maps and aerial
photography. The hotspots data from the FireWatch map service, which identifies
fires across the state, is also available. This hotspots layer can provide
source information for pastoralists, industry and tourists visiting the state.
We have leveraged the cost-effective technology of Google Maps, which is being
used to redevelop the shared location information platform. Locate sits on the
Google Maps and Google Earth platforms. Data is being provided from
commonwealth agencies, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and state agencies
Landgate, Main Roads, the Public Transport Authority and the Departments of
State Development, Lands, Education, and Mines and Petroleum. Since its launch
yesterday, over 67 000 pages on the Locate site have been visited already. I
encourage all members to go to www.locate.wa.gov.au to look at this innovation.
