I refer the Minister to page 904 of the 2003-2004 Budget Papers, which states that $30m of savings are to be made the 2004-2005 financial year within the Department of Education and Training, and I ask -
(1) Have these savings been identified?
(2) What savings, in dollar terms, have been identified through redundancies?
(3) How many full time equivalent positions will be made redundant in order to achieve these savings?
(4) What savings, in dollar terms, have been identified through the cancellation, amalgamation or downgrading of programs?
(5) Which programs will be cancelled, amalgamated or downgraded?
(6) On what basis where these programs targeted to be cancelled, amalgamated or downgraded?
(7) What other savings, in dollar terms, have been identified?
(8) How will these savings be achieved?

(1)–(8) Since January 2003, 21 staff have received redundancy payments totalling $770,159.
200 Full-Time Equivalent positions have been identified for abolition and savings of approximately $9 million will be achieved.
Further savings of $11 million have been identified to date, mainly from general operating budgets and the removal of duplication in service delivery following amalgamation of the Departments of Education and Training. Core program delivery in both the school and training sectors has been exempt from this process.
A comprehensive review of current initiatives and activity will be undertaken over the next two months to identify further savings options that will achieve the remaining $10 million.
