(1) For each of the past five calendar years, the number of hospital separations with post abortion complications was as follows:
For the purposes of this response, ‘abortion’ has been defined as a medical abortion (i.e. the figures do not include spontaneous abortions, known as miscarriages).
(2) Over the past five calendar years, the top three most common reasons for the hospital separations in relation to question (1) were:
(i) Delayed or excessive haemorrhage;
(ii) Other and unspecified complications; and
(iii) Genital tract and pelvic infection.
