Carnarvon hospital—Gascoyne Dash
61. Mr Shane Love to
the Minister for Health:
That was quite a politically
charged speech from the Premier.
I refer to the
Carnarvon hospital and its performance during the Gascoyne Dash motor event.
(1) Is the minister aware that the WA Country
Health Service had notice of the event?
(2) Did WACHS or the Carnarvon hospital contact
the event's organisers on the Saturday of the event stating that the hospital
was in a code brown situation and asking for the Sunday event to be cancelled?
(3) Why did WACHS not make timely provision of capacity
at the hospital for the event?

(1)–(3) I thank the member for the
question.
I want to start by saying at the
outset that the Carnarvon hospital on the weekend in question when the Gascoyne
Dash was held was fully staffed and had additional rostered medical staff in
preparation for the event that occurred that weekend. It is important to note
that there were 10 trauma presentations in a two-hour period as a consequence
of the Gascoyne Dash event. Two of those people were so seriously injured that
they needed to be stabilised in Carnarvon before they were airlifted to Perth
to receive the emergency treatment that they required.
I have been informed that WACHS
did not request that the event should be cancelled. It would ordinarily be the
requirement of the event organisers to have in place appropriate event
management so they could make decisions on the day. But clearly the hospital in
Carnarvon was fully staffed. There were additional staff there, and, indeed,
additional staff were flown in as a consequence of the demands that that event
put on the hospital on the day. As I said, there were 10 trauma events in a two-hour
period, with two of them so seriously injured that they needed to be airlifted.
I
want to acknowledge the staff who worked that weekend for the work that they
did in ensuring that the people who were injured in that event received
appropriate care and ensuring, as I say, that the two who were so seriously
injured that they needed to be airlifted were stabilised before they did so.
