(1) Is it the minister’s intention to close the departments of psychiatry at Royal Perth Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and relocate them to alternative sites; and, if so, will such closures result in a net reduction of mental health beds; and, if so, how many? (2) With whom did the minister consult on this particular issue and did these persons support the closure option? (3) When were the respective heads of the departments of psychiatry at both hospitals advised of the proposed closures? (4) Do these closures conform with both the national and state mental health strategies? (5) Given the adverse reaction to the closures, will the minister reconsider the decision to close the respective departments of psychiatry; and, if not, why not? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) No. There will be a relocation of some inpatient services from these sites to alternative mental health authorised facilities. The closures of beds at these sites will not result in a net reduction of mental health beds. (2) On 16 March 2004, the Minister for Health met with the director general; the chief executive, north area health service; the acting deputy director general, Healthcare; and the director, Office of Mental Health. As already noted, the departments of psychiatry are not closing. The strategies had previously been discussed with the area directors of mental health. (3) The respective heads of the department of psychiatry at both hospitals were formally advised of the endorsed strategies on 16 March 2004. (4)-(5) Not applicable as the departments of psychiatry are not closing.
