The Minister Replied:
(1 - 4)
The portion of the residue storage areas being developed for the Motorplex was previously classified as a Mine Site under the Department of Minerals and Energy's Mine Safety Inspection Act and the residue disposal operations were subject to an Agreement Act administered by the Department of Resources Development.
The characteristics of Alcoa's bauxite residue can be obtained from the 1993 Public Environmental Review titled Use of Bauxite Residue in the Peel-Harvey Coastal Plain Catchment prepared by Agriculture WA. This document is available in the Department of Environmental Protection's library.
(5 - 6)
The Motorplex site is being constructed partially over the residue storage areas and their associated embankment walls. Where disturbed during construction of the speedway, reinstatement of the 400mm thick impermeable clay liner and cap enclosing the residue will take place. As a result, there will be no exposure of the public to the residue material.
