QuestionView source ↗
I refer to the old South Fremantle tip site that operated for approximately 50 years as a repository for household and industrial waste, and ask - (1) Will the minister detail the known contamination that has been found in the ground at the tip site? (2) Will the minister detail the types of chemicals that have been found there? (3) Has there been any ground water contamination at this site; and, if yes, what has it been contaminated with? (4) Was medical waste dumped at the tip? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

(1)-(4) I thank the member for some notice of this question. All questions and queries relating to the South Fremantle landfill site should be directed to the City of Fremantle via the Minister for Local Government and Regional Development. The landfill site is situated on land that was owned by the City of Fremantle and the landfill was operated by the City of Fremantle. Therefore, the City of Fremantle has the information relating to the contents and behaviour of the landfill. These questions have possibly arisen due to the media reports about a proposal to remove the landfill material from the site. Neither the Department of Environment nor the Environmental Protection Authority has received a formal proposal for any such project and, therefore, cannot comment. It is understood from media reports that the City of Fremantle may be a joint proponent for redevelopment projects for the site and, therefore, once again any queries should be directed to it via the Minister for Local Government and Regional Development.
