I refer to the latest “Recruit a Friend” police campaign, which involved postage-paid postcards. (1) What is the cost of the campaign? (2) How many postcards have been distributed? (3) How many police officers have been recruited as a result of the postcard campaign? Hon JON FORD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Minister for Police and Emergency Services has supplied the following answer. (1) The estimated cost for the production and postage of the postcards is $4 234.54. The campaign ran throughout the month of October 2007. (2) Approximately 9 000 postcards were distributed at the Perth Royal Show and at various other events. (3) During October 2007, a record number of applicants applied to join the Western Australia Police - the highest number since 2004. It is not possible to determine how many police officers have been recruited as a result of the postcard campaign.
