VIOLENT OFFENDERS — BAIL AND SUPERVISION
ORDER RELEASE — PREMIER'S COMMENTS
682. Ms L. METTAM to the Minister for Police:
I have a supplementary question.
Given we are talking about a serious violent offender, should the Premier and Attorney
General have received a brief from the Western Australia Police Force or the
minister's office and not relied on incorrect media reports?

This matter is still before the
courts. I understand the member might want to attack the Western Australian
police. I do not know why the Liberal Party appears to be determined to do that
at every opportunity. I can say that as the matter
is before the courts, I do not think it is appropriate that we discuss it
further. With respect to what actually took place, of course, over time
I will receive a briefing from the police and it will become clearer. But it
was confusing at that time, to the extent that the journalist sitting at the
back of the court thought the police had opposed bail.
