INSPECTOR OF CUSTODIAL SERVICES - REPORT
I refer to today’s prison reports by the Inspector of Custodial Services, Professor Richard Harding. (1) Does the minister have confidence in Professor Harding? (2) Can the minister confirm the government’s plans to sell the Karnet Prison Farm site? (3) Given that Professor Harding, in his support for not selling Karnet Prison Farm, is reported to have said that it would be correctional and financial vandalism to throw away such an asset, does the minister still stand by her plans to sell Karnet Prison? Ms M.M. QUIRK

I thank the member for his question. (1)-(3) Unlike the Inspector of Custodial Services, I have never entertained the notion of selling Karnet Prison Farm. Members opposite may be aware that at present, because of our very successful law enforcement strategies, our prison populations are at an all-time high. Mr T. Buswell : Have you had discussions with Alcoa about offloading Karnet? Ms M.M. QUIRK : The last thing that I want to do is dispose of beds that we need in the prison system; therefore, there is currently no plan to sell Karnet Prison. Mr T. Buswell : Have you had discussions with Alcoa? Ms M.M. QUIRK : I have been approached by Alcoa; I have had one meeting. However, I reiterate that there are no plans to sell Karnet Prison Farm.
