The Government has considered a number of options for the refurbishment and upgrade of Carnarvon Hospital since 2001. Apart from minor ongoing works as detailed in answer 2, it was not until 2004/05 that a firm commitment and funds were allocated to proceed with a number of projects. In the State's 2004/05 Capital Works Program, the Government allocated $1.55 million for the upgrading of Carnarvon Hospital. This included a ward upgrade and the refurbishment of what was the maternity area for use for mental health patients. The State Government has recently increased the capital works allocation to $2.3 million for a revised scope of works that will include upgrading the existing general ward area including patient bathrooms, toilets, over-bed lighting and nurse call system, and will also enable maternity services and the palliative care room to be consolidated into the one ward area. This will allow improved patient management and consolidation of the nursing and support service functions needed. There will also be the replacement of the roof over the upgraded ward area.
