Department of Water and Environmental Regulation—Mindarie
Regional Council—Works approval application
520. Hon Dr Brad Pettitt to the Minister for the
Environment:
I refer to the
Mindarie Regional Council's work approval applications for the construction of
a piggyback landfill cell and leachate management area and community reports
that the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation is delaying the
assessment process for the applications.
(1) What is the status of the assessment of
these works approval applications?
(2) When does DWER anticipate the
assessment process will be completed?
(3) Is it possible that the delay in
assessing these applications could cause delays to the planned closure of the
Tamala Park landfill in 2028?

I thank the member
for some notice of question. I note that the question was first asked on
Tuesday 9 June and the answer was correct as of that date.
(1) The Department of Water and
Environmental Regulation is currently considering a detailed submission from the
Mindarie Regional Council in relation to the works approval application for the
construction of a new piggyback landfill cell and leachate management area at
the Tamala Park waste management facility.
(2) Decision on the works approval
applications is expected imminently.
(3) The timing of the assessment process
is not expected to impact the planned closure of the Tamala Park landfill,
which is a matter for the Mindarie Regional Council.
