DOMESTIC GAS SUPPLY
969. Hon Dr STEVE THOMAS to the Leader of the House
representing the Premier:
I refer to the Economics and
Industry Standing Committee's eighth report, Domestic gas security
in a changing world: Inquiry into the WA domestic gas policy: Final report ,
tabled on Thursday, 15 August 2024, which lists recommendation 30 as —
That the State Government allow
onshore gas projects to export LNG only if the domestic market is adequately
supplied and is expected to be well supplied for a period of time.
(1) Is the
domestic gas market currently ''adequately supplied'', and how
does the government measure whether it is?
(2) Is the policy of preventing
onshore gas being exported under review?
(3) Is the single
exemption to this policy granted by the McGowan government planned to be the
only exemption considered by the Cook government?
(4) Will the government respond to
this recommendation before Parliament rises at the end of 2024?
(5) Will the government clarify its
domestic gas position before the March 2025 state election?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(5) The
government welcomes the release of the parliamentary committee's report
into WA's domestic gas policy, which
will feed into our broader work to strengthen and modernise the policy. WA's
domestic gas policy has been central
to WA's success over the past two decades, supporting affordable and
reliable energy in WA, supporting local jobs and keeping our economy
strong. The 15 per cent reserve policy on offshore gas is vital to our economy,
and it will remain in place as long as Labor is in government. Our state's
gas belongs to Western Australians, and our top priority will always be to
ensure Western Australians benefit from that gas. The government will consider
the committee's recommendations and provide a response in accordance
with Legislative Assembly standing order 277(1).
