Attorney General representing the Minister for Corrective Services:
(1) Have any
asylum seekers from Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre been transferred
to Casuarina Prison as a place of detention?
(2) If yes to (1) —
(a) how many asylum seekers have
been moved to Casuarina Prison;
(b) have these asylum seekers been
charged or stood trial; and
(c) what is
the cost to the state government to transfer and accommodate these asylum
seekers in Casuarina Prison?
(3) What is
the process for transferring funds between Yongah Hill Immigration Detention
Centre and Casuarina Prison?

On behalf of the Minister for Corrective Services, I thank
the honourable member for some notice of the question. The Department of
Corrective Services advises that it holds these persons at the request of the
commonwealth Department of Immigration and Border Protection under a custody
hold order, pursuant to section 254 of the Migration Act 1958.
(1) Yes.
(2) (a) Since
the establishment of the Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre seven
detainees have been held at the request of the commonwealth Department of
Immigration and Border Protection.
(b) Reasons
for the custody hold orders are a matter for the commonwealth Department of
Immigration and Border Protection.
(c) Nil.
(3) The
Department of Corrective Services has a cost recovery process to recoup all
involved costs from the commonwealth Department of Immigration and Border
Protection.
