SKILLS WEST EXPO
I refer to the article in The West Australian on 10 February about the Skills West Expo. (1) Is the minister aware that the expo is being organised by the company EOC Group Pty Ltd? (2) Why is the minister championing this skills expo, which is run by an eastern states company, in direct competition with the locally produced Careers, Education and Employment Expo? (3) Has the minister or his department given any advice to technical and further education colleges or to the Department of Training and Workforce Development as to their participation in either the Skills West Expo or the Careers, Education and Employment Expo; and, if so, will the minister table that advice? Hon PETER COLLIER

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) Yes, the Skills West Expo is an initiative of West Australian Newspapers, which has engaged the EOC Group to manage the event. (2) The purpose of the Skills West Expo is to engage the Western Australian community with employers, training providers and industry leaders to focus specifically on skills shortage occupations such as the trades, which are critically important to the state’s economy. The Careers, Education and Employment Expo has a more general focus. (3) No advice has been given to TAFE colleges on participation in the Skills West Expo or the Careers, Education and Employment Expo. I understand that the Department of Training and Workforce Development will be participating in both expos.
