TREASURER — CHINA VISIT — CHINESE
COMMUNIST PARTY SUPPORT
37. Mr A. KRSTICEVIC to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question.
(1) Can the
Premier confirm that the Treasurer had an all-expenses-paid trip to China that
was partially funded by the Chinese Communist Party and partially funded by
Huang Xiangmo, who recently had his permanent residency and citizenship
applications stripped by the Department of Home Affairs?
(2) Will the
Premier demand that the Treasurer makes a personal explanation about his
activities in China and whether he met with Huawei?

(1)–(2) I
am unaware of anything the member is referring to. I am aware, because it has
been an issue of public moment recently,
that Paul Miles and Jim Chown participated in a delegation with, I think, the
Minister for Transport and Sue
Ellery, some years ago when the member was in government. I am aware of Julie
Bishop going on a delegation that was paid for by the Chinese government
and/or Huawei—I forget the exact details. I am aware that Julie Bishop
secured, from memory, I think it was a $400 000 donation to herself or to the
federal Liberal Party from a Chinese businessman or someone of that nature. I realise
that the member is trying to muckrake and engage in disgraceful conduct. I am
not surprised.
The SPEAKER : That is the end
of question time.
