I refer to children with stomach, intestinal and severe digestive problems and digestive diseases needing urgent paediatric gastroenterology services, and ask:
(a) is it true that children can be waiting up to a year to see a specialist paediatric gastroenterologist at Princess Margaret Hospital;
(b) what is the average waiting time;
(c) how many paediatric gastroenterologists are currently employed in the Western Australian public health system, and do any vacancies presently exist;
(d) how many children are currently on the waiting list to see a paediatric gastroenterologist; and
(e) is the Department covering the cost of interstate patient assisted travel claims for children seeing paediatric gastroenterologists interstate due to the current waiting times in Western Australia?

(a) No.
(b) The average waiting time for urgent cases is 4.5 months.
(c) Currently there are two full-time paediatric gastroenterologists and one part-time (academic). There are currently 1.5 FTE vacancies. In the last two years, a full-time locum has been appointed for a number of three month periods according to his availability.
PMH is awaiting the arrival of an overseas (UK) appointee who was due to commence late 2011. However, there has been a protracted delay due to registration difficulties, with arrival scheduled for November 2012. There is another 0.5FTE vacancy that is to be readvertised in the coming months.
(d) Approximately 135.
(e) No.
