VERY HIGH FREQUENCY
HANDHELD RADIO REPLACEMENT PROGRAM
1063. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the Minister for Emergency Services:
I refer to Legislative Council
question without notice 1003 answered on 10 September 2024 about the very high
frequency handheld radio replacement program.
(1) Will the VHF
handheld radio replacement program be completed ahead of the high threat
period; and, if not, when will the program be completed?
(2) Regarding
the Vertex VHF handheld radios that have been replaced to date, will these be
available to brigades, groups or units if an ageing Vertex radio is
unserviceable; and, if not, why not?
(3) What is the
standard number of handheld radios issued per appliance?
(4) What is the
training requirement on volunteers when the TP9600 radio is issued?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
The Department of Fire and Emergency
Services advises the following.
(1) The
replacement program is currently underway in the midwest and Gascoyne regions
and has been completed in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions. Further rollouts
to other regions will continue post the high threat season.
(2) Yes.
(3) The number of
radios is dependent on the service, appliances and the brigade, group or unit's
response and capability profile.
(4) All training
on new Tait TP9600 radios is facilitated by DFES staff.
