The Department's properties are vacant for reasons including general maintenance and cleaning prior to being reoccupied; extensive refurbishment under the Department of Housing and Works' Upgrade programs such as New Living and Regional Upgrade Strategy; fire damage; modifications to house people with special needs such addressing mobility issues; being in the process of having furniture abandoned by past tenants collected or disposed of; being assessed for redevelopment; or requiring extensive maintenance following vandal damage. The Department has a target of reoccupying vacant properties, which have been vacated and only require general maintenance and cleaning, within ten (10) days. The 2007 Report on Government Service found that WA has the lowest average turnaround time, that is the lowest time taken to occupy public housing stock.
