I think there we have writ large the
problem of ever electing a Liberal or coalition government; that is, it seems
to think that government is a magical place where you can click your fingers
and things happen. The fact of the matter is that any laws or regulations have
to be considered carefully. We have to make sure that we talk with the right
people and those who we will be regulating.
Mr R.S. Love : There was a crisis
before you called the road safety round table. It is weeks later now and still
no action on what must be a very simple change to the regulation.
The DEPUTY SPEAKER : Leader of
the Opposition!
Mr R.H. COOK : And so, my
cloth-eared friend opposite clearly did not hear my first remarks in response
to his question, which was to set out all the things we have done subsequent to
the road safety round table.
There will be more
opportunities. We have to make sure that we do these things properly. We have
to talk to the law enforcement agencies. We have to talk to the road
safety experts. We have to see what works in other states and we have to talk
to the people with lived experience and give them the respect of being heard
and consult with them, which is what we are doing. I have the words of the
Minister for Road Safety in the previous Liberal–National government, Rob Johnson, when in 2013 he said, ''There
should be no politics in road safety'' and that it ''should be non-political'' and I agree with him. What we see opposite is a group of
people desperate to grasp onto any issue they can find, regardless of the
merits of their argument or, indeed, the integrity of what they bring to the
debate. We will continue to make sure that we make the right decisions in a timely
manner and implement them properly to ensure that they are effective.
