METRO AREA
EXPRESS LIGHT RAIL — REPLACEMENT BUS SYSTEM
308. Hon KEN TRAVERS to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the $1.2 billion estimated cost of a bus rapid
transit system to replace Metro Area Express light rail.
(1) Is the $1.2 billion figure escalated?
(2) If yes to (1), to what year is it escalated?
(3) What is the un-escalated cost of a BRT, and in what year
dollars was it calculated?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of this question.
(1)–(3) As the minister has
previously advised, preliminary analysis suggests that the government should
further consider a like-for-like bus rapid transit solution. This analysis will
be reviewed by government, as it would be remiss not to investigate if the same
service can be provided at a significantly lower cost.
