I refer members to the 20 copies of the federal budget papers that were provided to the Labor Party some six hours before the federal budget was handed down. Some members in this chamber will experience a sense of deja vu because I will use the exact words the now Premier used when he asked the former Premier a question. The then Leader of the Opposition’s exact words were - Will the Premier follow the lead of the Federal Government and other States by agreeing to provide the Opposition with a budget briefing on Thursday prior to its release in Parliament; and, if not, why not? They are the Premier’s words precisely. Dr G.I. GALLOP

We intend to follow exactly the same practice followed by Richard Court. It was never a problem for my opposition. On one occasion, I gave the opposition’s reply to the budget speech immediately after the budget had been delivered to Parliament. The member obviously has some difficulty with this. That is a reflection on his talents and capacities rather than on the processes we are adopting.
