SECONDARY SCHOOLS — YEAR 7 STUDENTS
I refer to the minister’s statement in this place seven months ago, on 13 October 2010, that she expected to make a clear decision in two to three months on year 7s going to high schools. (1) Given no funding is allocated and no announcement is in this year’s budget about this move, does that mean the decision is at least another financial year away? (2) Exactly when will she make a decision and remove the uncertainty she has caused school communities across the state? (3) Given she first raised this issue in budget estimates hearings on 27 May 2009, does she think she might have a decision by budget estimates 2011? Dr E. CONSTABLE

I thank the member for Victoria Park for the question. (1)–(3) The member for Victoria Park has raised again a very important issue that we have been tracking and doing some research on for some time. I make no apology for taking time on this particular issue; it is a very complex and important issue that, either way, will make a difference to how we educate young people in this state. As I have discussed before, there has been a delay because of the signing off of the first four areas of the national curriculum. Mr B.S. Wyatt : You’ve had it since December, minister. Dr E. CONSTABLE : I know. The final thinking through and provision of advice to the Premier, and through to cabinet, has been completed. The detail of the proposal for year 7s is now in the cabinet process, and cabinet will make the decision.
