STAMP DUTY REBATE
1287. Hon COLIN TINCKNELL to the minister representing the
Treasurer:
(1) Does the government acknowledge that the recently
announced 75 per cent stamp duty rebate for off-the-plan apartments is
not designed to help the residential construction industry as a whole, but only
the big-budget apartment developers, due to the fact that no residential houses
will be eligible for this rebate?
(2) With nearly 3
000 apartments currently for sale and over 2 500 for rent in the greater Perth
region, does the Treasurer feel this rebate will disadvantage those with
apartments currently available?
(3) What percentage of these multi-tiered development
rebates are expected to go to regional Western Australia?

I thank the honourable member for
notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the
Treasurer.
(1) No, and
neither does the construction industry. In a 23 October media statement, the
Housing Industry Association said the policy —
... will mean a swift boost for
building activity which will be great for local jobs and give industry the
confidence to retain and train more workers �
''With more than 120,000
people employed in construction in WA, the positive impact of this initiative
will be felt across the entire home building supply chain.''
(2) No.
(3) The
percentage of multi-tiered developments in regional Western Australia will be
determined by buyers and developers.
