I thank the member for his question and for his interest in
seniors in his community. As the member pointed out, this week is Seniors Week
in WA. Three-hundred and thirty thousand Seniors Card holders in WA have the
opportunity to be recognised for their great work throughout the community.
Last Saturday, it was great to kick off Seniors Week with the Senior of the
Year award. It was fantastic to acknowledge Maureen Angus from One Arm Point.
She is a fantastic lady who has done some fantastic work for her community.
Maureen was more surprised than anyone else when she won Senior of the Year. To
see the expression on her face last Saturday was fantastic. Maureen has gone
out of her way to bring the One Arm Point community together. For members who
do not know, One Arm Point is on the peninsula a couple of hundred kilometres
north of Broome. The member for Kimberley knows the place very well, as do I—I
lived at Lombadina in 1975. One Arm Point is very isolated. Most importantly,
Maureen brought the community together to try to access a lot more benefits for
seniors. She even received money from Lotterywest to buy a troopy vehicle to
move them around to attend outings and doctors and so forth. Maureen is a great
recipient of the WA Senior of the Year award for 2014.
There are 90 events across the state this week to recognise
seniors in our community. We have some fantastic things. Tomorrow is the Have A
Go Day at Burswood. A number of seniors will be at that day. It will be
fantastic. There is a bake-off and some bell ringing.
Mr M. McGowan :
That is six ''fantastics''!
Mr A.J. SIMPSON :
Yes, absolutely. There will be a free opera in Central Park on Thursday
afternoon. On Saturday, there is a festival at the Perth Cultural Centre.
Central area transit buses will tour around Perth and Fremantle. Seniors can
hop on and off guided tours to see free events in our community, and also
statues and places of interest. Seniors are required to produce their Seniors
Card when they go on a tour to get a discount, including coffee and lunch, and
also discounts at the Western Australian Museum and Perth Zoo. These events are
not being held in just Perth. In Bunbury, the Dolphin Discovery Centre is
putting on a seniors' day this week. In Karratha, there is the Big Day
Out, and at the Mukinbudin Men's Shed a long-table dinner is being
held, which is also fantastic. From Kimberley to Albany, to Kalgoorlie in the
east, 90 events will be held to recognise the fantastic work that seniors do in
our community. It is a great opportunity for them to get out and be recognised
as seniors in our community.
