HOUSING
SUPPLY UNIT
221. Dr D.J. HONEY to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Is the housing supply unit
just another thought bubble like the Premier's GST fighters to make it
look like he is doing something about a crisis that has developed under Labor's
watch?
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Order, please!

It is one of those units that is supplying important policy
advice that is informing the current budget process. We can see, through the
measures that we have already taken, what a significant contribution it has
made to making sure that we are doing those things that are assisting people,
whether it is our $1.7 million rental assistance program or our incentives to
short-term rental accommodation providers that have brought over 100 properties
onto the rental market—a market that is challenged. So, 100 is a great
benefit to that particular market. We are also doing other things that are
about directly involving ourselves in the housing provision market, such as
$100 million for two Common Ground facilities and an $80 million infrastructure
development fund that is boosting infill and apartment development and
supporting regional worker accommodation. We are also investing $150 million in
community housing grants across the state for new builds, maintenance and
refurbishments. This government has done more than any government in history to
make sure that we continue to leverage and build our housing supply to make
sure Western Australians have great homes to live. We will continue to do more,
whether it is providing assistance to builders under stress or continuing to
work with property developers through the infrastructure development fund to bring homes onto the market
faster. It is working. We are continuing to grow our housing stock at
record rates, but it is in the context of a robust economy that is growing and
attracting people to this state in record numbers. It is the fastest growing
state in Australia, because people know that if they come here, there are jobs available and there is opportunity available,
and they know that there is a government that will look after them.
