(1) The Department for Communities commissioned a report on women in leadership to identify the barriers to women achieving senior positions and to assist organisations with assessing their own gender equity and providing strategies to implement change. The report titled
Women in Leadership: Strategies for Change
was prepared by the Maureen Bickley Centre for Women in Leadership, Curtin University of Technology.
In June this year, the Department for Communities held an event in conjunction with the Institute for Public Administration Australia to present the findings and outcomes of the report and to assist organisations to understand how to implement change toward gender equity in their own workplaces.
The Western Australian Government is committed to increasing the number of women on Government Boards and Committees. The Department for Communities Women's Interests is providing scholarships for a number of women to undertake the Australian Institute of Company Directors Company Directors Course. Western Australian women interested in serving on government or not for profit boards and committees are invited to nominate for one of the Scholarships to undertake the Company Directors Course during 2012.
(2) The budget for these programs includes $5 000 for the printing of the
Women in Leadership: Strategies for Change
booklet, and $20 000 has been allocated toward further leadership and economic independence initiatives for women in the year ahead. This is in addition to $111 175 for 23 women's grants awarded to various community organisations to develop projects that strengthen the social and economic wellbeing of women, increase their participation, promote positive images of women in the community, encourage women's leadership and/or encourage women's sense of safety.
(3) The recommendations from the Women's Advisory Council Symposium are currently informing the development of a Women's Plan for the Department for Communities Women's Interests. An event on the portrayal of women in the media was held on 16 June 2011 to invite public discussion of the issues surrounding women in the media, as per the recommendations of the symposium.
In relation to recommendation 7 under 'Employment', this has been forwarded to the Federal Minister for Employment Participation, the Hon Kate Ellis MP, for her reply.
