FIREARMS —
BUYBACK PROGRAM
1412. Hon WILSON TUCKER to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer to the minister's
comments to the media that the government will reopen the firearm voluntary
buyback scheme despite previously ruling out any extensions to the scheme.
(1) Was any
official communication provided to firearm dealers or owners prior to the
minister speaking to the media yesterday?
(2) Since the
publication of the minister's statements to the media this morning,
what official communication has been distributed to stakeholders?
(3) Is the
minister aware that the WA police firearm reform webpage was not updated and
continued to display contradictory information well after 10.00 am today?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. I respond on behalf of the representing minister.
The following response has been provided by the Minister for Police.
(1)–(3) This
is a new buyback for industry. This is not open to individual gun owners, but
it does give dealers a reason to buy firearms from those licence holders who
chose not to participate in the original buyback. The webpage has been updated.
