POLICE — ADDITIONAL OFFICERS —
REGIONAL WESTERN AUSTRALIA
1018. Mr P.A. KATSAMBANIS to the Premier:
I refer to out-of-control violent crime in our regions last
financial year, including crime against people, which is up 22 per cent in
Newman, 17 per cent in Kununurra, 11 per cent in Geraldton, 27 per cent in
Bunbury and 20 per cent in Albany.
(1) Can the
Premier confirm that violent crime is plaguing not only Perth but also regional
Western Australia?
(2) Will he
immediately commit to additional police officers and emergency funding to deal
with the ongoing meth crisis to address this out-of-control violence in our
regions?

(1)–(2)
As I said earlier, the big increase in crime happened during the last
government under the Frontline 2020 model. Members opposite might note also
that, for instance, the Peel policing district was abolished by the last
Minister for Police, the now Leader of the Opposition. We have reinstated it.
As a consequence, under this government, there has been some improvement in
crime figures across the state.
Clearly, crime is an issue in the
community and that is why we are doing a range of things, as I outlined in the
earlier answer. However, I do not want to do what members of the Liberal Party
do, which is talk down their own communities. They run down their own
communities for political purposes.
Several members interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : That is exactly what they do.
Our police are well supported. We have reinstated the
traditional policing model across the state. The rate of crime statistics has
declined since members opposite were in office. Obviously, in some regions and
some areas the rate bounces around but we have to take an overall picture.
