At-risk youth—On-country diversion facility—Kimberley
1. Hon Peter Collier to the Minister for Regional Development :
I refer the minister
to the Labor government's announcement in May 2022 to establish an at-risk
youth on-country diversion facility in the Kimberley.
(1) Given that the Marlamanu program was scheduled
to open in 2023, has it in fact commenced? If yes, when and how many youths are
placed at the facility?
(2) If no, why not, and when will it open?

I thank the Leader
of the Opposition for the question.
(1)–(2) I am very pleased to say that as
the new Minister for Regional Development in the re-elected Cook government, Marlamanu
will be a policy that I will be responsible for in my new role. It is fair to
say there has been a fair bit of discussion about this policy and the new
facility. Where it had been planned to go was of course affected by the Fitzroy
Valley floods, so some more planning had to go into it to find a more
appropriate place. However, I was briefed on the policy last week and I am
certainly confident that we will be prioritising this. This is certainly a
facility that members of the community in the Kimberley anticipate having up
and running. I am certainly making it a priority of mine to deliver on.
Hon Peter Collier: It has been three years.
Hon Stephen Dawson: It is my first day in the job in
Parliament.
Hon Peter Collier: I have great confidence in
you—a lot more than in your predecessor.
