(1) Is the minister aware of concerns regarding road safety on Utakarra Road, Geraldton, near the Utakarra supermarket and the children’s crossing that services St Johns and Rangeway Primary Schools as a result of anticipated increased iron ore road traffic from 2006? (2) Will the minister consider bringing forward stage 2 of the Geraldton southern transport corridor project given the healthy state of the state’s budget, and the increasing royalties being derived from the mid-west region? Hon SUE ELLERY

On behalf of the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, I thank the member for some notice of the question. (1) Main Roads is aware of safety issues on this section of Utakarra Road and has worked with the local council to install street lighting adjacent to the supermarket under a recent state black spot project, and has established a guard-controlled children’s crossing to service the schools within an urban 50 kilometre an hour speed limit area. Main Roads will continue to work with the council to ensure that an appropriate level of safety is maintained. (2) The Gallop government has acted on its election commitment to construct stage 2 of the Geraldton southern transport corridor project with the allocation of $10 million in the 2005-06 state budget and forward estimates. This project, together with other high priority projects across the state, will be reviewed as part of the preparation for the coming budget process, and every opportunity will be taken to bring works forward wherever possible.
