MULTIPURPOSE INDOOR ENTERTAINMENT STADIUM
Will the minister outline to the house the details of the proposed new excellent multipurpose indoor entertainment stadium to be located in the electorate of Perth - I hope the minister will appoint me to a committee to come up with a much better name for it - and address some of the confusion that seems to be emanating from the opposition regarding this building? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

I thank the member for question. It is clear that I did not write it. I thank him also for his enthusiastic interest in the new entertainment and sports facility that will be located in his electorate. Unfortunately, the opposition does not seem to be equipped to grasp exactly what is the state government’s goal in creating this new and iconic entertainment facility in the city. Comments by them in the media express and highlight their total ignorance about the project. However, that has not stopped them from publicly expressing their naive views. They say that they do not like the concept design and they do not think it is big enough. They appear to not understand its function. Sadly, that is a typical response from members opposite. Based on the comments by opposition members that I have heard on the radio and have seen in other media, I believe that they do not have a clue what they are talking about. The opposition’s works and services spokesperson was interviewed on Paul Murray’s program and said that we needed a stadium for some 30 000 people so that he could watch music concerts that he likes, by groups such as the Eagles. He does not understand that the new building has been designed to be functional and practical so that it can cater for a wide range of events. Although Hon Peter Collier supports the new building’s location on Wellington Street, he seems confused about the seating arrangements. He has not grasped that a 30 000-seat stadium cannot be shoehorned onto that site, which he says he approves of. The state government has worked very closely with entertainment, sporting and concert professionals so that we can tailor a facility that will meet all their needs. Each of these groups has given their overwhelming support for the concept and for the seating arrangement, which will cater specifically for the Hopman Cup. The building will have a retractable roof. The stadium concept seats approximately 14 000 people but industry sources indicate that the majority of performances will involve 8 000 seats. The government is committed to delivering a new world-class indoor entertainment and sports stadium - a facility that will put Perth back on the map for national and international events. Perhaps the opposition should, for once, congratulate the government on its vision for the future.
