The total number of teachers employed over this period increased by about 2000 in the period 2000 - 2007, as shown below:

However, as a proportion of the entire workforce, teachers (and classroom teachers) decreased.
The increase in non-teaching staff is largely attributable to:
· An increase in the number of Education Assistants who support teachers by approximately 1,950 FTE over the last 7 years; and
· Approximately 900 FTE school cleaners being offered employment with the Department.
