ENTERPRISE PARK — WANGARA
241. Mr P.T. MILES to the Minister for
Lands:
I was happy to see the minister in
my electorate this morning on the completion of the state government's
Enterprise Park in Wangara. Can the minister please explain to the house the
contribution that Enterprise Park has made to WA and the economy?

I thank the member for Wanneroo for
the question. Again, I thank him strongly for his advocacy for things such as
Enterprise Park and the role that that industrial development opportunity plays
in driving the economy in the area that he represents. This morning we
celebrated a milestone in the development of Enterprise Park, which is a
123-hectare site. The planning started in the late 1980s. That was when greater
Perth had a population of about one million people and the City of Wanneroo—I
cannot remember whether it was a city then—had a population of around
90 000 people. That industrial site development was thought of, planned and put
in place by, I think, the Industrial Lands Development Authority at the time,
which was obviously LandCorp's equivalent in those days. It has taken a
long time.
The original investment was around
$13 million towards that site. I think there are two more sites to be sold
until it is fully closed out. That site has made a total contribution of $37 billion
towards the economy over that time. When planning was started, about 11 per
cent of the people in the Wanneroo area were employed in the local area; now
nearly 40 per cent of the people in that region are employed locally. Having
the industrial development opportunities on those sites significantly
contributes to the economy. People who live locally can work locally, which
means that it takes pressure off our infrastructure developments. Of course,
the innovation that the land development agency at the time was able to bring
to the table has been used in other developments. The development that will
roll on from this one is Meridian Park at Neerabup; it will be a smooth
transition. Again, there are lots of opportunities for industrial development.
It is very pleasing to see those sites. They are attractive to be part of and
we can understand why businesses go there. Obviously, being in that park
enhances the opportunities that businesses have to engage in the marketplace.
Because the site has been planned very well, people want to be a part of it. I
thank the member for Wanneroo for his support for such developments in his
area. It is great to see something that contributes such a huge amount to the
economy. This government is right behind that development.
