NEW DERBY PRISON
I refer the minister to her press release dated 24 April about a new prison in Derby. (1) Will the minister explain how the estimated cost of $93 million was determined, given that the planning and design are yet to be done, as per the minister’s announcement? (2) Will the minister table any relevant report or analysis underpinning the Derby prison decision; and, if not, why not? Hon JON FORD

I thank the honourable Leader of the Opposition for some notice of the question. The Minister for Corrective Services has supplied the following answer - (1) The estimated cost was provided to the department by a qualified quantity surveyor and was based on a concept design for the Derby prison and on Australasian custodial facility cost benchmarks. (2) I refer the honourable member to two reports, one entitled “Kimberley Aboriginal Reference Group’s initial recommendations toward the Kimberley Custodial Plan - October 2005” and the other entitled “The Kimberley Custodial Plan: Stage Two Report - Prisoner Programs” of February 2006. These public reports are available on the Department of Corrective Services website.
