GORDON INQUIRY - IMPLEMENTATION OF RECOMMENDATIONS
I refer to the front page of The West Australian on Saturday, 1 April regarding the possibility that the government could set up an Aboriginal communities development portfolio under the control of either the Premier or Treasurer. (1) Why was the high-priority Gordon inquiry action plan and its oversight groups taken out of the Premier’s department in April 2005 and put into the Department of Indigenous Affairs? (2) Why was the Gordon inquiry action plan downgraded, when nothing had changed for the Aboriginal children in Halls Creek and in many other camps throughout the north west? (3) In November 2005, the Auditor General stated in his report on the progress on implementing the response to the Gordon inquiry that an authoritative account of the progress of implementing initiatives or of the overall action plan did not exist. As a result, monitoring and oversight groups do not have available basic information. Has this information now been provided? Hon ADELE FARINA
